Update your information before August 30th to receive the child tax credit

News & Blog

The IRS launched a new feature that allows any family to receive their monthly child tax credit payments by quickly and easily updating their mailing address through the IRS.gov portal. This feature helps any family that chooses to receive their payment by paper check to avoid postage delays or even having a check returned for failure to deliver.

The updated address will help make all future IRS correspondence useful to taxpayers who receive their payments by direct deposit. For example, the IRS will mail a year-end statement (Letter 6419) to each taxpayer who received advance payments of the Child Tax Credit during 2021. Having a current address on file with the IRS will ensure prompt delivery of this statement.

Families will need Letter 6419 to quickly and accurately complete their 2021 federal income tax return next year. This is important because, for most families, the advance payments they receive during 2021 cover only half of the total credit. They will claim the remaining portion on your 2021 tax return.

Any of these changes made before midnight ET on August 30 will apply to the September 15 payment and all subsequent monthly payments, scheduled for October 15, November 15, and December 15.
